Malaysian Recipe : Crispy Prawns in Hot Sauce


  • 500g fresh prawns
  • 1 tbsp lime or lemon juice
  • 1 tsp five-spice powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup cornflour
  • Oil for deep-frying


  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp chili sauce
  • ½ cup stock
  • 1 tbsp corn flour
  • 1 red chili, finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp chopped shallots


  1. Clean, remove veins and shell prawns. If too large, cut each into two pieces and place in bowl.
  2. Mix in the lime juice, five-spice powder, salt and pepper, and allow to marinate for 5 minutes.
  3. Beat eggs together lightly and dip in the prawns until coated, then roll in cornflour. Deep-fry in hot oil until golden brown. Drain on absorbent paper. Place on platter and serve with sauce.


  1. Sauté the onion and garlic in hot oil until transparent. Add the tomato sauce, chili sauce, soy sauce and stock.
  2. Blend in the corn flour. Stir and simmer until the sauce begins to thicken.
  3. Just before serving, add the finely sliced chilies and chopped shallots.
