Indian Recipe : Prawn Malaikari

This is a recipe from Bengal, India.


  • 1 kg prawns
  • 200 g onions
  • 2-g garlic
  • 30 g ginger
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 medium sized coconut (grated)
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 6 cloves
  • 16 cardamoms
  • 2 cups curds in 1 cup water
  • 1 dalchini stick
  • Oil or ghee for cooking


  1. Extract milk from coconut and keep aside.
  2. Make a paste of onion, ginger, garlic, turmeric and chili powder in a grinder with a little water.
  3. Dry grind dalchini, colves and cardamoms (garam masala and set aside)
  4. Clean and devein prawns. Apply salt and a little turmeric. Keep aside.
  5. heat 200 g of oil or ghee or a mixture of both.
  6. Put in the bay leaves and then the prawns. Fry for a minute.
  7. Mix curds with ground paste. Stir fry the prawns with this mixture till oil separates.
  8. Add coconut milk and salt. Cook till a thick gravy forms.
  9. Remove from ire and garnish with dry ground masala. Serve hot.
